Success in leadership is success in people. People are your most important resource. You must value them more than equipment, money etc. What makes a successful pastor or leader is being a master in people skills. If you follow these principles, you will become a people-person.
1. Understand the people you lead. People are often insecure and the worst kind of shortcoming comes when they come to God. As a leader, help people believe in God and help them believe in themselves. In leadership you succeed with EQ (emotional quotient) more than IQ (intelligence quotient). People don't care to know how much you know, until they know how much you care. The Pulpit is meant to pull your people out of the pit. Just like women are made or destroyed by words, the Church (which is the bride of Christ) is also made by words.
2. People like to feel special, honor and affirm them always. If you have leaders always honor your leaders. Make people feel special because that is the way God himself lavishes His love on us. Everybody needs someone to believe in them. Even God, he had to affirm Christ directly from heaven to the hearing of many people saying, "This is my beloved son, listen to him".
3. Inspire people and give them hope for a greater future. If you believe in your people and inspire them, they will succeed. All successful pastors trade in hope. There are three cardinal virtues: hope, faith and love; trade in them and your church will be filled to the brim. Bring God near to them by making them know that you believe in them. When a leader believes in the people they will exceed their expectation. Show your people that you believe in them and they will rise to the challenge.
4. People need to be understood, so listen to them. When you stop listening to people, you lose the right to speak to them. Listening skill is part of communication skills and this will make you a better preacher. Sometimes, just listening to your people brings healing to them. Half of healing is unburdening your soul. God Himself is a God that answers prayers (which means he is always listening). That is why people can give their life for the government of God. God's servant-leadership was evident when the Israelites wanted a king, He permitted them even though it wasn't his perfect will for them.
5. People lack direction, navigate for them. Anybody that has direction, will always have followers. Provide them with a vision and give them a sense of purpose. Be the one to give them a compass for their life and destiny.
