Enugu State Government to rehabilitate CAR returnees who are from the State

Africa
ENUGU – The Enugu State Government said on Thursday it would absorb its indigenes
evacuated from the Central African Republic (CAR) into its civil service and offer
assistance in other trades.
The Commissioner for Human Capital Development and Poverty Reduction, Dr Godwin
Ogenyi, gave this indication while addressing the returnees in Enugu.
According to Ogenyi, government’s support for the returnees will be geared towards
making them happy.
“We are responsive enough to know that if our people have been displaced due to
difficulties of any sort especially wars and things that have threatened their
lives, government will ensure that such people are resettled.
“This government will design programmes that fit into people’s skills.
“Those who are into trading, we will re-establish them, those who are in public
service and that is all they can do, we will also try to look into ways to get them
in.
Also speaking, Mr Joseph Iroegbu, the Enugu State Co-ordinator of the National
Directorate of Employment (NDE), said the event was intended for a headcount of the
returnees so as to run programmes that would help them integrate.
“We are just here to take a census of those of you who are returnees and to be able
to run programmes that will make you fit into the economy.
“We know you are devastated already but all hope is not lost. We are here to give
you hope, to restore you back to your previous status.
“What you lost in Central African Republic, you are going to gain in Nigeria.
“We are going to ask you some questions to know exactly the kind of interventions
we can bring along to suit your situations.’’
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Chairman of the Enugu State
Progressive Union in CAR, Mr Romanus Ezeh, expressed happiness over the concern of
the state government.
Eze appealed for urgent steps to improve the standard of living of the group.
Another returnee, Mrs Ifeyinwa Ani, pleaded with the state government to absorb her
into the civil service.
“I am very happy concerning what the state government is doing today (Thursday) and
I will also appreciate it if they will help me by putting me in the civil service.’’
Enugu State indigenes who returned from CAR were 13 men, four women and nine
children. (NAN)
